The 2010 WWF Greenland Ice Report and the Iceland volcano

Update, 1/26/11, "Greenland ice sheet is safer than scientists previously thought," UK Guardian, D. Carrington
.

The WWF Greenland ice report (1/21/11) says 2010's melt 'set new records,' starting earlier than usual in late April. WWF makes no mention of the Iceland volcano that covered much of the Northern Hemisphere air space beginning March 21, 2010. (Above map indicating a volcano took place in the Northern Hemisphere, 4/14-4/25/10, wikimedia composite of UK Met Office data). Dust and ash reached eastern Canada, so mightn't some have landed either on Greenland or in its atmosphere? Just a question raised upon the anomaly of 'late April' onset. A 10/4/10 PNAS study suggests global dust has more of a warming factor than is currently being estimated by climate models.
  • (This post responds to the 1/21/11 WWF Greenland ice report particularly in relation to the Iceland volcano. There may be other issues with the WWF report as it states its results came from numerous sources and computer models not independently verified at this time).

Citation for ash having drifted to Canada:

4/19/10, "The volcano will not have a noticeable effect on North American weather in the near-term, although some
where flight restrictions are possible today, according to CNN. As the ash circulates around the Northern Hemisphere there may be more vibrant sunsets than normal..."... (6th paragraph from bottom).

WWF's mention of dust and soot

WWF's report contains a quote that dust and soot on the ice is one of 'other' factors 'we are examining.' It does not say the ice report is conditional based on results of dust studies. It seems to say the general relevance is being looked into for future reference and does not caution that the results could affect the current verdict. Also, it only mentions dust 'deposited over the ice sheet' and not as contained in the atmosphere:

"Dr Tedesco, “Other ice melting feedback loops that we are examining include the impact of lakes on the glacial surface, of dust and soot deposited over the ice sheet and how surface meltwater affects the flow of the ice toward the ocean.”"

Citation for the 10/4/10 PNAS study
  • Dust and soot on the ice is one factor
A 10/4/10 PNAS study found that climate models are not adequately addressing the impact of dust and soot which act to trap heat:

"On a global scale, the dust cycle in most GCMs is tuned to match radiative measurements, such that the overestimation of the radiative cooling of a given quantity of emitted dust has likely caused GCMs to underestimate the global dust emission rate. This implies that the deposition flux of dust and its fertilizing effects on ecosystems

12/30/10 article discussing PNAS study:

"Most climate models use dust data from satellites that measure how many particles of different sizes are suspended in the atmosphere. These measurements reveal an abundance of tiny clay particles... which can reflect sunlight back into space and cool the planet.

But satellites may be missing larger particles, called silts, which don’t hang around in the air as long. Silts up to 20 micrometers in diameter can act as a warm blanket to trap heat inside the Earth’s atmosphere."...

Since WWF's claims will be used by some as reason to place a tax on evil Americans including myself, they must of course be triple checked by sources unconnected with any named in the WWF report. Without such verification, politicians have already extracted billions of hard earned dollars from Americans and given them to global warming programs such as those that brainwash children, and even for many years to pay expenses of ClimateGate figures. In any case, there is already proof that taking even more money from taxpayers and giving it to bunch of grifters in an organized crime racked system can't possibly help the planet.

This insane criminalizing of ordinary Americans has been allowed to grow for decades without the average American's knowledge but with the complicity of many criminals, hedge fund billionaires, and politicians including those in the White House. We are voting the latter out as fast as we can and then getting out of the UN. ed.
