League of Women voters full page ad to Obama in Hawaii shows frightening denial of climate science and ignorance of decades of US climate action. US CO2 has dropped to 1992 levels and is heading lower per scientists

Update,1/8/13, 2012 temperatures in US states had "four all-time lows. The lows all occurred in Hawaii.

-------------------------------------

The League of Women Voters relied on incorrect or outdated science in creating their full page climate terror ad on 1/5/13 aimed at Obama in Hawaii. Obama himself knows that US CO2 has dropped to 1992 levels and is heading lower. The LWV should inform themselves about current science before demanding changes they erroneously and grandiosely claim will benefit all Americans. Further, this group doesn't speak for Americans.

As President Obama wraps up his family vacation on his native Hawaii, the League of Women Voters sent him back to Washington DC with a reminder that his legacy on climate change will have a great impact on the island state’s future.  In a full-page print ad, which will run on Saturday in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, the group is urging President Obama to set tough standards for new and existing power plants under the Clean Air Act.

The President has the authority to act now to address these sources of dangerous climate change. A warming planet, according to the recent Pacific Islands Regional Climate Assessment (PIRCA), will impact Hawaii especially hard. The report makes clear that rising sea levels and higher temperatures pose real threats to the natural resources of Hawaii.
Elisabeth MacNamara, President of the League of Women Voters of the United States said, “Climate change is the greatest environmental threat of our generation, perhaps of all time.”….
Beppie Shapiro, President, League of Women Voters of Hawaii said, “The President has said, ‘We want our children to live in an America that isn’t … threatened by the destructive power of a warming planet.‘ He is right. If we fail to act,

rising sea levels, super storms, and droughts will forever change these islands, our nation and the world.”

The ad is part of a broader push by League of Women Voters for executive action on climate change. The group recently sent a letter to President Obama, which calls for the President to “take the historically necessary step of controlling industrial carbon pollution from new and existing power plants.  Use your existing regulatory authority to make this happen.””… via Tom Nelson. The League of Women voters and people of Hawaii should cheer knowing US CO2 has dropped steadily for 20 years and is heading lower to the point experts believe US energy policy will change to reflect reduced status of US CO2 danger. President Obama is aware of this stunning news and mentioned it in a speech on Aug. 28, 2012.  An 8/16/12 AP report cited the 20 year drop  of  US CO2:

8/16/12, AP: “In a surprising turnaround, the amount of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere in the U.S. has fallen dramatically to its lowest level in 20 years.“…
  •  From Pres. Obama’s speech:
8/28/12, at Iowa State: “We’re on track to emit fewer greenhouse gases this year than we have in nearly 20 years. You can keep those trends going.”

  • 8/28/12, The NY Times noted Obama’s recognition of US emissions drop.

More on US CO2 dropping to 1992 levels and heading lower:

In a surprising turnaround, the amount of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere in the U.S. has fallen dramatically to its lowest level in 20 years, and government officials say the biggest reason is that cheap and plentiful  natural gas has led many power plant operators to switch from dirtier-burning coal.
Many of the world’s leading climate scientists didn’t see the drop coming, in large part because it happened as a result of market forces rather than direct government action against carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere.
Michael Mann, director of the Earth System Science Center at Penn State University, said the shift away from coal is reason for “cautious optimism” about potential ways to deal with climate change….

In a little-noticed technical report, the U.S. Energy Information Agency, a part of the Energy Department, said this month that energy related U.S. CO2 emissions for the first four months of this year fell to about 1992 levels. Energy emissions make up about 98 percent of the total.

virtually everyone believes the shift could have major long-term implications for U.S. energy policy.”…

News of US CO2 plunge has been described as:

“While there has been some press coverage of these facts (see here and here) I continue to find that most people are surprised to learn about this progress….

6/4/12, “Climate change stunner: USA leads world in CO2 cuts since 2006,” Vancouver Observer, Saxifrage

“Not only that, but as my top chart shows, US CO2 emissions are falling even faster than what President Obama pledged in the global Copenhagen Accord.

Here is the biggest shocker of all: the average American’s CO2 emissions are down to levels not seen since 1964 --

over half a century ago. …Coal is the number two source of CO2 for Americans. Today the average American burns an amount similar to what they did in 1955, and even less than they did in the 1940s. …It is exactly America’s historical role of biggest and dirtiest that makes their sharp decline in CO2 pollution so noteworthy

In order to determine where [catastrophic man-caused] climate change fits into the priority ranking of our nation’s most important agenda items, it seems worthwhile to step back and take stock of the quiet but tremendous progress that the U.S. has already made in reducing carbon [dioxide] emissions.”…

To the League of Women Voters and people of Hawaii:

Devoting 13 federal agencies to ‘climate’ matters is hardly lagging in “action.”

Trillions have been taken from US taxpayers for climate endeavors via agency budget allocations, tax subsidies, diversion of US military to climate or green projects, countless federal regulations, vast sums shipped out in no strings foreign aid for ‘climate’ capacity building, etc.

Other countries’ CO2 hasn’t dropped despite hundreds of billions spent on cap and trade and extra taxes. This isn’t to say the US government hasn’t become business partners with the ‘climate’ industry.

If CO2 remains a concern for LWV or the state of Hawaii they should focus their efforts on countries other than the US:

“EPA Administrator Jackson confirmed an EPA analysis showing that unilateral U.S. action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions would have no effect on climate….“I believe the central parts of the [EPA] chart are that U.S. action alone will not impact world CO2 levels,” Administrator Jackson said.”…

6/3/10: “New Zealand research shows Pacific Islands not shrinking,” New Zealand One News. From journal, Global and Planetary Change: “It has been thought that as the sea level goes up, islands will sit there and drown,” Prof Kench told the New Scientist. “But they won’t. ” Mentions land area of Tuvalu had increased due to a typhoon in 1972.

6/11/10, “Editorial: Pacific Islands not sinking from global warming,” Washington Times

researchers from the University of Auckland in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission in Fiji documented changes in 27 vulnerable, low-lying reef islands in the Central Pacific. Using aerial photographs taken as early as 1944, the areas were carefully mapped and compared with modern satellite images. It turns out that the islands did, in fact, change over time, but they are hardly sinking. Overall, 20 grew or remained stable. The island of Funamanu, for example, expanded from 7.4 acres to 9.5 acres in size – a 28 percent growth. Only seven islands shrunk, with the biggest percentage change occurring on Tengasu, which dropped from a tiny 1.7 acres to 1.5 acres….
This research was not conducted by scientists who disputed climate change, but even they noted the suspicious absence of verification for a key alarmist claim.
  • The lack of monitoring seems a gross oversight given the international concern over small island stability and pressing concerns of island communities to manage island landscapes,” the report stated.”

Climate “action” facts:

1. In 2011 alone the US spent “$10.6 million (taxpayer dollars) a day to study, combat, and educate about climate change." 1/5/11

--------------------------
2. US climate action’ in November 2012 included giving $6 billion US taxpayer dollars for ‘clean energy’ to the Sultan of Brunei who owns 5000+ cars and to the Pres. of Indonesia, a country so corrupt even the World Bank says crime adds 20% to costs. Below, one of the Sultan of Brunei’s cars:

League of Women voters has long supported the idea of CO2 terror  via the National Call to Action on Global Warming. Perhaps like many others, LWV never guessed they'd win their battle with the US so soon. Among the group's demands of Americans:

Establish Science-Based Pollution Reduction Targets. Cut total, economy-wide global warming emissions by at least 25 percent below 1990 levels by 2020.”…

Ed. note: Civilized people care about clean air, clean water, and preserving our environment. That is something entirely different than claiming CO2 is destroying the planet. There are real problems in the world that could use attention. A generation has wasted itself on CO2 terror.
